How to remove EIS on Mercedes GL-Class X164
Mercedes GL-Class EIS removal procedure
In order for a Mercedes key replacement to be made, the EIS is required to pull the needed data so that a new key can be made to work the ignition switch. In this tutorial you will learn how to remove the electronic switch from a X164 from 2006 to 2012. For the X166, please refer to the M-Class procedure on how to remove ignition switch as the removal process is the same.
Removal time: 25 minutes
Tools needed: Needle nose pliers, T20 torx, flat head
Step by step instructions:
Step #1:
Pull out ashtray on bottom of center console, you will see 2 T20 torx bolts, one on top left and one on the top right. Remove them, then close the ashtray then pull out the assembly and disconnect black electrical connection.
Step #2:
Next pull-on bottom of panel of ac unit until it disconnects, then pull down and out no need to disconnect and wiring just lay to the side of driver’s seat.
Step #3:
Remove the 2 T20 torx screws that hold the radio, then push silver tabs down so they unlock and pull radio out and set to passenger side.
Step #4:
Now remove EIS ring that holds EIS to dashboard by rotating it counterclockwise with pliers or flat head until it spins off and is removed.
Step #5:
Now you can reach in with your hand and access the EIS through the radio area and pull it out, being sure to remove any electrical connectors first.
Once removed, ship the electronic ignition switch back to us with the preprinted shipping label that is emailed to you to Mercedes Key Replacement.
